LIFE ON BUTTERMILK AND TENTERHOOKS - Moscow, the great nerve centre of the USSR, with its Red Square and Kremlin, its power and its politics, is a focal point of world attention. But for the many millions of Russians living outside its immediate impact, what does life hold? Do the devout still go to church, the robust drink vodka, the holidaymakers go to the Black Sea resorts? Many towns have quiet cobbled streets and courtyards where families live in quaint old houses, recreation parks where the pensioners gather, cake shops and coffee houses where waistlines are padded with pancakes and sweets. The pattern of living seems simple, but over it hangs the shadow of the KGB. Kenn Griffiths, who was our first Young Photographer of the Year, used part of his prize to travel through Russia.
